The Jubilee Years 1887-1897
The decade between Queen Victoria’s Golden and Diamond Jubilees saw Britain at the peak of its imperial power, its cultural achievements and its financial strength. The book follows the Queen and the Empire through these ten years.
Produced in 1996 to commemorate the 40th and 50th Jubilee years of Queen Victoria in 1887 and 1897, this lavishly illustrated book was published in 1996 as the presentation volume for members who re-joined in 1997 and agreed to purchase at least four books in that year.
The book is a collection of eyewitness accounts that give an intimate view of Britain and its Jubilee celebrations a century earlier. Chapters cover Queen Victoria’s family, the complex social mores of Victorian society, recent inventions (eg. the bicycle, X-rays) and the scandal of Oscar Wilde. It was compiled and introduced by Roger Hudson
There are over 100 illustrations (60 in colour) integrated into the text of this 240 page book, which is printed on lightly glossed paper.
